Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

📍 Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad, Kerala

Part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and contiguous with Bandipur and Nagarhole across the Karnataka border, which means animals move freely across a very large protected landscape. Muthanga is the southern, more visited of Wayanad's two sanctuaries.

What you might see

Elephant are the headline and are seen regularly, along with spotted deer, sambar, gaur and langur. Tiger and leopard are present but sightings are uncommon and nobody should travel expecting one.

Birdlife is excellent — hornbill, woodpecker and a long list of forest species. Morning drives are generally better than afternoon.

How safaris work

Jeep safaris run in fixed morning and afternoon slots with Forest Department drivers and guides. Vehicle numbers per slot are limited and tickets are sold at the gate, not reserved in advance, so arriving before opening is what determines whether you get on.

You cannot drive your own vehicle into the sanctuary, and walking is not permitted.

Before You Go

  • Be at the gate before it opens; slots go quickly in season.
  • Morning drives generally give better sightings than afternoon.
  • Binoculars are worth carrying — much is seen at distance.
  • The sanctuary closes for periods each year; confirm before travelling.
