The climb
The route starts at the Forest Department checkpoint near Meppadi and rises through tea estate before the tree cover gives out entirely. From there it is open grassland on a steep, exposed ridge — no shade, and underfoot it is slick whenever there has been rain.
Most walkers reach the heart-shaped lake in ninety minutes to two hours. It is a genuine climb rather than a stroll, but it needs no technical skill. The descent is harder on the knees than the ascent is on the lungs.
Permits and access
Entry is controlled and the number of permits issued each day is capped, handed out at the checkpoint on a first-come basis. Groups queue before the gate opens, so an early start is practical necessity rather than enthusiasm.
Access beyond the lake has been restricted at various points for conservation and fire safety, and the position changes between seasons. The trail also closes outright during heavy monsoon and in high fire-risk periods. Check close to your date.
Before You Go
- Shoes with real grip — worn soles on wet grass cause most of the slips here.
- Carry two litres of water per person; there is nowhere to refill past the gate.
- Plastic is restricted inside the forest area and bottles may be counted in and out.
- Cloud usually closes in by late morning, taking the view with it.
