Kuruva Island

📍 Mananthavady, Wayanad, Kerala

A cluster of uninhabited islets in the Kabini river, covered in protected evergreen forest and reached by raft. Once you cross there are no vehicles, no shops and no buildings — rare in a district where most sights come with a car park and a tea stall.

Crossing over

Bamboo rafts or small boats carry visitors across the channel. Numbers are limited each day, deliberately, which is part of why the forest on the far side remains in the condition it is.

Marked trails lead through the interior. The draw is quiet: rare orchids, medicinal plants, birds and the river itself rather than any single viewpoint.

When it is open

This is the most weather-dependent site in Wayanad. The islands close through the monsoon and reopen only when the river drops to a safe level, which varies year to year. Sudden closures after upstream rain are common even in season.

Confirm on the day. A wasted ninety-minute drive is otherwise entirely possible.

Before You Go

  • Always confirm it is open the same morning — closures are frequent.
  • Daily visitor numbers are capped, so arrive early in season.
  • Nothing is sold on the islands; carry water.
  • Plastic is restricted and checked at the crossing.
