Lakkidi Viewpoint

📍 Lakkidi, Wayanad, Kerala

The top of the Thamarassery ghat, where the road finishes nine hairpin bends and the land falls away towards the plains. For most people arriving from Kozhikode this is their first proper sight of Wayanad, which is why it works better as a stop on the way up than as a separate outing.

The view and the climb

From the lip of the ghat you look back down the valley the road has just climbed. On a clear morning the view runs a long way; by midday cloud frequently sits in the gap and there is nothing to see at all.

The hairpins themselves are part of the experience. Traffic can be slow, particularly where lorries are labouring, and it is worth allowing for that rather than being surprised by it.

The Chain Tree

Nearby stands the Chain Tree, wrapped in iron chain, tied to a local legend about a tribal man who showed the route through the ghat and was killed for it. It is a brief stop rather than a destination, but it sits a short distance from the viewpoint and most drivers will point it out.

Before You Go

  • Stop on the way up rather than making a separate trip.
  • Early morning is clearest; cloud usually fills the valley later.
  • Parking is informal and tight — take care pulling in and out.
  • Monkeys here are bold; keep food and bags closed.
