Pookode Lake

📍 Vythiri, Wayanad, Kerala

A small natural freshwater lake ringed by evergreen forest, sitting at altitude near Vythiri. It is often described as shaped like the map of India, which takes some imagination, and it is among the easiest places in Wayanad to spend a pleasant hour with no walking to speak of.

What there is to do

A paved path runs the circumference, taking perhaps twenty minutes at a gentle pace. Pedal boats go out on the water, and there is a small freshwater aquarium and a handicrafts shop by the entrance.

It is a short visit by design — an hour covers it comfortably.

Managing the crowds

Its accessibility is also its drawback. By late morning on a weekend or holiday the car park fills and the path gets busy. Early morning is a different place entirely: mist on the water, birds in the canopy, and very few people.

If your schedule only allows a midday visit, treat it as a stop rather than a destination.

Before You Go

  • Go early; it is markedly quieter and better before mid-morning.
  • Fully walkable for most mobility levels, unlike much of Wayanad.
  • Good first stop on the way up from Vythiri.
  • Plastic is restricted at the entrance.
