Why people choose Vythiri
Vythiri is the first proper hill stop after the Thamarassery churam, which makes it the easiest part of Wayanad to reach from Kozhikode — roughly an hour and a half once you are past the hairpins. That convenience, plus dense evergreen forest on all sides, is why the district's best-known resorts cluster here.
The rainforest canopy keeps it noticeably cooler and wetter than Kalpetta or Sulthan Bathery. If your picture of Wayanad is mist, leeches in the undergrowth and rain on a tin roof, Vythiri is the version you are imagining.
What kind of property to expect
Three broad categories. Large rainforest resorts with pools, spas and multiple restaurants, usually set on their own patch of forest. Smaller boutique properties and plantation bungalows, often family-run, with a handful of rooms. And treehouses, which Vythiri is particularly known for — more on those below.
Private pool villas are the most requested and the first to go, especially over long weekends and from mid-December to early January. If that is what you want, three to four weeks of notice is realistic in season.
Getting there and getting around
Kozhikode (CCJ) is the nearest airport at roughly 70km, Kannur (CNN) around 100km. Both take two to three hours depending on traffic through the ghat section. Bangalore is a six to seven hour drive via Mysore and Gundlupet.
Once you are up, a car matters. Vythiri's properties are spread out along the forest roads, Pookode Lake and Lakkidi viewpoint are a short drive, and Chembra and the waterfalls are further again. Autos are scarce after dark and cab apps do not operate reliably here.
Nearby, within easy reach
Lakkidi viewpoint sits at the top of the ghat, about 6km away, and is worth the stop on the way up rather than a separate trip. Pookode Lake is a short freshwater lake ringed by forest, good for an hour with children.
Soochipara and Meenmutty waterfalls are a 45-minute to one-hour drive, best between October and January when there is water but the rocks are not treacherous. Chembra Peak is about an hour away via Meppadi.
Common Questions
How far is Vythiri from Kozhikode airport?
About 70km, which takes two to two and a half hours. Most of the time is spent on the nine hairpin bends of the Thamarassery ghat section, which is slow but scenic. We arrange airport pickups if you would rather not drive it yourself.
When is the best time to visit Vythiri?
October to May for reliable weather. December and January are coolest and busiest. June to September is heavy monsoon — properties stay open and rates drop considerably, but treks close and leeches are a genuine nuisance. Some people come specifically for the rain.
Are there resorts in Vythiri with private pools?
Yes, several properties offer villas with private plunge pools. They are the most requested category and book out first, particularly over weekends and the Christmas and New Year period. Tell us your dates and we will check what is actually free rather than what is advertised.
Is Vythiri suitable for a trip with young children?
It works well. Pookode Lake, the short forest walks and most resort grounds are easy going. Chembra Peak and the waterfall climbs are not suitable for small children. We can build an itinerary that keeps the driving short.
