What a Wayanad treehouse is actually like
The honest version: most are a single room built into or beside a mature tree, between four and twelve metres up, reached by a staircase or a rope-and-pulley lift. Expect a double bed, an attached bathroom, a small balcony and a lot of insects. The good ones have hot water and reliable power; the basic ones do not.
What you are paying for is the setting, not the square footage. Waking up inside the canopy with hornbills moving through it is the point. If you need air conditioning, a television and room service, a pool villa will make you happier.
Who they suit, and who they don't
They suit couples, photographers and anyone who has specifically wanted to sleep in a tree. One or two nights is usually right — longer and the novelty gives way to the staircase.
They do not suit anyone with mobility difficulties, families with toddlers, or guests uneasy about heights or insects. Most properties will not take children under a certain age in treehouses at all, for good reason.
Where they are
Most cluster around Vythiri and Lakkidi, where the forest is dense enough to support them, with a handful more near Meppadi and in the plantation belt towards Mananthavady.
Properties vary enormously in standard and the photographs online are frequently years out of date. We have been to the ones we recommend, which is the main reason to book through us rather than a listing site.
Booking one
Treehouses are the single hardest room type to get in Wayanad. Most properties have one or two, so a resort with fifty rooms may have two treehouses, and those go first.
Four to six weeks ahead is sensible for a weekend, longer for the December holidays. Weekday nights are far easier and usually cheaper.
Common Questions
Are Wayanad treehouses safe?
The established properties are built on engineered platforms and inspected. Staircases are steep and often wet, so the real risk is an ordinary slip rather than anything structural. Properties using cable-car access operate them with staff, not guests.
Do treehouses have attached bathrooms and hot water?
Most do. A few of the more rustic ones have a bathroom at ground level, which is worth knowing before you book rather than after. We will tell you which is which.
Can children stay in a treehouse?
It depends on the property, and many set a minimum age of around ten to twelve. If you are travelling with younger children we would usually suggest a cottage and a treehouse visit rather than a treehouse stay.
How far in advance should I book a treehouse in Wayanad?
Four to six weeks for a weekend in season, and considerably longer for the last two weeks of December. Midweek is much easier. If your dates are fixed and tight, message us and we will tell you honestly whether it is realistic.
